It's a well known fact that any business with more than a few users would benefit from having a server in-house. Servers provide a central point for user authentication, company documents, and additional services such as backup, email and databases etc.

Usually, when a company decides to invest in a server, the software costs involved are quite high (to say the least!). Most businesses have  historically opted for a Microsoft product, such as Microsoft Server (or Microsoft Small Business Server), due to it's 'ease of administration' and compatibility with Microsoft desktop operating systems (XP Windows Vista, Windows 7, etc).

Unfortunately, the cost of Microsoft Server software isn't getting any cheaper! In addition, you have to purchase an additional CAL (client access license) for each 'user' on the network. Microsoft includes licences for 5 users in their Server software - after that you have to purchase one for every additional user!

So - is there a cost-effective alternative to Microsoft Server?

The simple answer is yes - Linux!

There have been huge advances in recent Linux distributions, especially in terms of their ability to inter-operate with Microsoft Windows desktops. basically, we now have the ability to have a Linux server acting as a Domain Controller in practically the same way that a Microsoft Server does. Users will, effectively, have the same 'experience', logging on with a username and password, accessing network files, printers, databases, and email, just as they would with MS Server!

The differences?

  • Linux is free!
  • Linux servers are inherently more stable, run faster, and need 'patching' less often.
  • Linux servers are much more secure.
  • Linux doesn't suffer from virus attacks.
  • There are hundreds of open source applications available for free to enhance and extend your Linux server.
  • Did we mention - Linux is free!
  • And much, much, more!

To give you an idea of what can be saved by utilising the power of Linux, take a look at this comparison:

Isn't this worth at least thinking about?
